Knife Box

Bement-KnifeBox Back in the 1950s my family had a wall mounted knife box. But since then the concept of putting knives in a box on a wall has disappeared completely. Why? One problem I see is these lend themselves well to being mounted on the side of a wall cabinet. But then it is too high for short people.

The image at the right is from The Cutlery Story, From Stone Age to Steel Age by Lewis D. Bement 1950. It is exactly what we had.

I then went to eBay to see what I could find. I found one for sale one exactly like it. It hung around for a long time as a buy-it-now listing for $10. Now it is gone. This could be a woodshop project. All construction details are shown below. I'd make the top straight across and have two mounting holes. This is 9" wide. Wall cabinets are 13" deep.

Front View: It measures approximately 9"W x 13-1/2"H x 2-1/8"D.

Top View: I would think that all slots could be long, with two small knives sharing a slot. The top block may have to be thicker for the strength.

Bottom View: Remove the two screws and the bottom can be removed for cleaning. The glass would then slide out.

Side View: The sides have grooves. Not necessary.

Knife Strip

This knife strip was in an apartment I took over in 1976. It was about a year old at the time. I have kept it since. It appears to be teak.
